{"id":17291,"date":"2024-03-20T17:12:20","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T16:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/startup-biochica-scarti-ittici-biomasse-acquatiche-chitina-chitosano\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T10:02:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T08:02:01","slug":"startup-biochica-fish-waste-aquatic-biomass-chitin-chitosan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/startup-biochica-fish-waste-aquatic-biomass-chitin-chitosan\/","title":{"rendered":"BIOCHICA: fish waste and aquatic biomass turned into resources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>global fish market<\/strong> is continually growing, with world fish production reaching a historic high of <strong>171 million tons<\/strong> in 2016.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this expansion comes with <strong>significant waste<\/strong>: according to the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, waste in developed countries can reach <strong>9-15% of the catch<\/strong>.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among these wastes, many come from <strong>crustaceans<\/strong>, mainly due to the inedibility of their shells. Yet, these <strong>contain a precious but undervalued resource<\/strong>: <strong>chitin<\/strong>, the second most abundant natural biomass after cellulose.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chitin and <\/strong>its derivative <strong>chitosan <\/strong>are <strong>used in numerous sectors<\/strong>, from cosmetics to medicine, from the food industry to wastewater treatment, and agriculture.<sup>3<\/sup> However, in Italy, these compounds are mostly imported from abroad, especially from Asian countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the crucial importance of the fish market to <strong>our country&#8217;s economy<\/strong>, not utilizing <strong>local fish waste<\/strong> both as an economic opportunity and to promote environmental sustainability represents a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOCHICA: from fish waste to resource<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BIOCHICA<\/strong>, a startup from Marche, has specialized in obtaining <strong>bioactive molecules<\/strong> such as chitin and chitosan by <strong>valorizing waste biomass<\/strong>, such as by-products from the fishing sector and aquatic biomasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative originates from the &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enabling-project.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ENABLING<\/strong><\/a><\/strong>&#8221; <strong>project<\/strong>, within the European Union&#8217;s Horizon 2020 program, which aims to support the <strong>development of the circular bioeconomy<\/strong> through the industrial valorization of biomass for the production of low-environmental-impact Biobased Products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the resources and support received, <strong>BIOCHICA&#8217;s <\/strong>goal is to create and accelerate a <strong>local market for the purchase and sale of Chemical Building Blocks with subsequent applications in strategic sectors<\/strong>. In particular, through in-depth studies and collaborations with other national and European entities, the startup aims to achieve <strong>large-scale production of chitin and chitosan in Italy<\/strong>, fostering the local sustainable supply chain and reducing imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOCHICA and blue crabs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>virtuous example<\/strong> of BIOCHICA&#8217;s valorization work is related to the <strong>blue crab<\/strong> (<em>Callinectes sapidus<\/em>), a species native to North and South America that has become invasive in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, this crab has been rediscovered as a valuable gastronomic resource. At the same time, the company continues to explore the environmental capabilities of its compounds, such as the <strong>absorption of microplastics, heavy metals, and organic pollutants<\/strong>, aiming at water purification. Looking to the future, BIOCHICA aims to explore new applications of <strong>chitin <\/strong>and <strong>chitosan <\/strong>not only in the <strong>nutraceutical<\/strong> and <strong>pharmaceutical fields<\/strong> but also in the production of materials for <strong>eco-design<\/strong> and <strong>bio-architecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOCHICA joins the Bio4Dreams Ecosystem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, the startup BIOCHICA joined the <strong>Bio4Dreams ecosystem<\/strong> with the start of a <strong>personalized incubation path<\/strong>. An entry that aligns with the incubator&#8217;s growing interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/bioinvestit-trieste-stage-urban-center\/\"><strong>circular bioeconomy<\/strong><\/a> themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Bio4Dreams is supporting BIOCHICA in activities related to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winblue-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WINBLUE<\/a><\/strong>: a European project aimed at accelerating women&#8217;s empowerment in the blue economy, facilitating their participation in five sectors focused on the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>September 2025<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udd80 BIOCHICA is participating as a partner in the European project MARMADE, which aims to enhance the value of marine biomass by contributing its expertise in transforming waste into functional molecules. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/biochica-eu-project-marmade-sustainable-marine-biomass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the news<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>April <\/em>2025<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfc6 BIOCHICA wins the <strong>Premio America Innovazione 2025<\/strong>, an award from the <strong>Italy\u2013USA Foundation<\/strong> dedicated to highly innovative Italian startups.
