{"id":17374,"date":"2020-11-03T14:18:19","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T13:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/chemicare-malattie-rare-correlate-al-calcio\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T11:47:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:47:47","slug":"chemicare-rare-diseases-related-to-calcium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/chemicare-rare-diseases-related-to-calcium\/","title":{"rendered":"ChemiCare: a new frontier against calcium-related diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"il-ruolo-fondamentale-dello-ione-calcio-nell-organismo-umano\">The fundamental role of calcium ion in the human body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Calcium is a crucial ion<\/strong> in the human body and plays a vital role in <strong>regulating numerous cellular processes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, its concentration within cells is finely regulated by several mechanisms, one of which is the Store-operated calcium entry (SOCE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alterations in this mechanism<\/strong>, and therefore in calcium concentration, are <strong>linked to the onset of various diseases<\/strong>, including some rare diseases that currently lack a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"un-rimedio-agli-squilibri-di-ione-calcio-ca2\">A remedy for calcium ion (Ca<sup>2+<\/sup>) imbalances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was these premises that brought together \u2013 in the laboratories of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniupo.it\/\">University of Eastern Piedmont<\/a> \u2013 two <strong>research groups<\/strong>, one <strong>specialized in the synthesis of compounds achievable with simple chemistry<\/strong> (<em>click chemistry<\/em>) and the other in <strong>pharmacology <\/strong>and the <strong>study of calcium signals<\/strong> and its role within cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea born from this collaboration was to <strong>develop new molecules capable of blocking alterations in SOCE<\/strong> in related diseases, returning calcium to physiological levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contro-le-malattie-rare-correlate-al-calcio\">Against rare diseases related to calcium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the joint effort, <strong>the research group has discovered compounds with unique properties<\/strong> and great translational potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These compounds have been patented, and concurrently, <strong>the startup ChemiCare was founded<\/strong> with the mission of <strong>developing pharmacological therapies for rare diseases related to alterations of SOCE<\/strong> and calcium levels, such as acute pancreatitis, tubular aggregate myopathy, York platelet syndrome, and Stormorken syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lo-stato-dell-arte\">State of the art<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(as of October 2020)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, ChemiCare is conducting <strong>preclinical studies<\/strong> under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). This is a crucial phase to <strong>ensure the safety and tolerability of their lead compound<\/strong> in different animal models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The startup is also interfacing with a series of companies focused on the production of the compound under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) conditions in order to <strong>complete all phases of preclinical development and meet all regulatory aspects related<\/strong> to the study and production of new therapeutic molecules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ChemiCare&#8217;s <strong>goal <\/strong>is to complete the preclinical studies to garner interest from pharmaceutical companies <strong>to complete clinical studies and subsequently reach the market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe are the frontier of therapy against rare diseases related to calcium, a hope for those still incurable patients, who often remain invisible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><strong>Beatrice Riva<\/strong>, CEO ChemiCare<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aggiornamenti\">Updates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>December 2025<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcc8 ChemiCare closed a <strong>\u20ac2.5M seed round with CDP Venture Capital SGR<\/strong>, Bio4Dreams, and Bridge4Pharma, enabling the completion of <strong>CIC-39\u2019s<\/strong> preclinical studies and accelerating the path toward clinical trials. <a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/chemicare-seed-financing-cdp-venture-capital-duchenne\/\"><strong>Read the news<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>February 2025<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcb0 <strong>STOP-MS<\/strong>, an innovative research project involving ChemiCare and aimed at developing a new therapeutic approach to combat multiple sclerosis (MS), has been <strong>funded by the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FISM)<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/chemicare-funding-fism-multiple-sclerosis-therapy\/\">Read the news<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>September <\/em>2024<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 The molecule <strong>CIC-39<\/strong>, ChemiCare\u2019s drug candidate, has received orphan drug designation from the FDA for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. <a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/chemicare-fda-orphan-drug-designation-duchenne-muscular-dystrophy\/\"><strong>Read the news<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>June 2024<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\ude80 From June 10 to 14, ChemiCare participated in the traction phase of <strong>CALL4INNOVIT <\/strong>in San Francisco: a program organized by <strong>INNOVIT <\/strong>to provide Italian companies with the skills and opportunities needed to expand and compete internationally. <a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/braindtech-chemicare-silicon-valley-call4innovit\/\"><strong>Read the new<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bio4dreams.com\/en\/braindtech-chemicare-silicon-valley-call4innovit\/\">s<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>September<\/em> 2023<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 ChemiCare officially becomes an innovative SME: a very important milestone that represents a clear sign of the growth and stability of this entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>March<\/em> 2023<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83c\udfc6 ChemiCare received the &#8220;America Innovation&#8221; award: a prestigious recognition given by the Italia USA Foundation to innovative Italian entities that, with their ideas, respond to global market challenges. The award ceremony will take place in Rome at the Chamber of Deputies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>December<\/em> 2022<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705
