BIOCHICA, the startup breathing new life into residual biomass

BIOCHICA, currently incubated at Bio4Dreams, is a startup based in Italy’s Marche region, operating in the field of circular bioeconomy. It transforms residual biomass from the fishing and agri-food sectors into sustainable bioactive molecules such as chitin and chitosan.

“The sea is an invaluable resource: the circular blue economy and the sustainability of the supply chain are essential goals for our territories. Italy is surrounded by the sea, which has always been an important resource—but there is so much more potential”, said Carla de Carolis, Co-founder of BIOCHICA, during the award ceremony.

This award adds to a series of recognitions BIOCHICA has received over the past year, including the victory in the Trieste stage of the BioInvestIT roadshow; financial support as the best innovative idea in the Call4Ideas FVG, promoted by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region and the Life Sciences Cluster FVG; and the selection of the BIOCHICA QUE MARIS project, funded under the Horizon Europe programme within the Joint Undertaking public-private partnership.
